Religion and astronomy may not overlap
often, but a new NASA X-ray image captures a
celestial object that resembles the "Hand of
God."
The cosmic "hand of God" photo was
produced when a star exploded and ejected an
enormous cloud of material, which NASA's
Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array, or
NuSTAR, glimpsed in high-energy X-rays,
shown in blue in the photo. NASA's Chandra
X-ray Observatory had imaged the green and
red parts previously, using lower-energy X-
rays.
"NuSTAR's unique viewpoint, in seeing the
highest-energy X-rays, is showing us well-
studied objects and regions in a whole new
light," NuSTAR telescope principal investigator
Fiona Harrison, of the California
Institute of Technology in Pasadena, said in a
statement.
The new image depicts a pulsar wind nebula,
produced by the dense remnant of a star that
exploded in a supernova. What's left behind is
a pulsar, called PSR B1509-58 (B1509 for
short), which spins around 7 times per second
blowing a wind of particles into material
ejected during the star's death throes.
As these particles interact with nearby
magnetic fields, they produce an X-ray glow
in the shape of a hand. (The pulsar is located
near the bright white spot in the image but
cannot be seen itself, NASA officials said.)
Scientists aren't sure whether the ejected
material actually assumes the shape of a
hand, or whether its interaction with the
pulsar's particles is just making it appear that
way.
"We don't know if the hand shape is an
optical illusion," Hongjun An, of McGill
University in Montreal, said in a statement.
"With NuSTAR, the hand looks more like a fist,
which is giving us some clues."
The red cloud appearing at the fingertips is a
separate structure called RCW 89. The pulsar's
wind may be heating the cloud to produce the
low-energy X-ray glow, astronomers believe.
The X-ray energies seen by NuSTAR range
from 7 to 25 kiloelectron volts, or keV,
whereas the energies seen by Chandra range
from 0.5 to 2 keV.
The Hand of God is an example of pareidolia,
the psychological phenomenon of perceiving
familiar shapes in random or vague images.
Other common forms of pareidolia include
seeing animals or faces in clouds, or the man
in the moon. Despite its supernatural
appearance, the Hand of God was produced
by natural astrophysical phenomena.

There was pandemonium in Ilobu
town, Irepodun local government
area of Osun state in the early hours
of Wednesday, when a dead man
was discovered in an open grave
with a shovel beside him. According
to residents, the man who was
described to be middle aged may
have been attempting to exhume a
corpse for ritual purposes from the
grave he was discovered stone dead.
Saturday Tribune gathered that the
victim and his partners in crime
allegedly came to Tonto compound in
the early hours of Wednesday with a
plot to exhume the corpse of an aged
woman and sever her decomposed
head, allegedly for ritual purposes.
A credible source in the community,
who did not want to be named, told
Saturday Tribune that “this
particular corpse was buried five
years ago and the suspected ritualist
attended the burial in Ilobu.”
He explained:
“There are indications that he did not
dig the grave alone. What we
discovered is that he may have been
attempting to cut off the head of the
corpse when something suddenly
hooked him as he managed to force
half of his body into the grave to cut
off the head.
He got hooked and died on the spot, a
development which possibly compelled
other ritualists to run away from the
scene so that they may not be affected
by the mysterious thing that killed
(their colleague).” While commenting
on how the residents of Ilobu got to
know about the incident, since it
happened in the wee hours, the
source said a woman who was
hawking ogi (a local corn meal)
early in the morning of Wednesday
spotted the torso of the suspect
sticking out of the grave and raised
the alarm.
“His corpse was discovered around
6.30am and his head was covered in
mud. The residents here alerted the
police division in Ilobu and they later
came to evacuate the body and put it
in their van before taking him away,”
Saturday Tribune was informed that
the remains of the suspected ritualist
were subsequently taken to and
deposited at the mortuary of the
Ladoke Akintola University Teaching
Hospital (LAUTECH), Osogbo, the
state capital.
When contacted, the Commissioner
of Police in Osun State, Mr Ibrahim
Maishanu, said he was aware of the
incident, and that the police would
conduct investigation to determine
what led to the suspect’s death. He
said the police could not confirm
that the suspect was a ritualist
because of the circumstances
surrounding the discovery of his
corpse at a grave in Ilobu; that they
would have to investigate the matter
before giving any concrete
information on the incident.

A 34 year old man of Thito ward in Maun accused of raping a male disabled student at Thuso Rehabilitation Centre appeared in court last week. Jackson Mbapeua Tjihonge is facing a single count of rape in which he is accused of raping a male student at the disabled school’s boarding facilities at night. Appearing before Chief Magistrate Mompati Taolo, the Centre’s Deputy Executive Director, Dickson Samaemo, told the court that between the dates of 12th and 16th May 2009, he received a complaint from one of their students (name withheld) who accused the cook of sodomy. Samaemo said the complainant mentioned that the accused had a habit of knocking on their windows and doors at night. “He said that Tjihonge went into their room which was dark and undressed him and penetrated his anus.” Samaemo said that the complainant reported that the rape episodes happened in a series of days and he had to ask for help because it was painful. The Director said that they took the mentally disabled student, who was studying life skills, to social workers where he repeated his claims. Taolo said that their investigations did indeed prove that the accused was seen around the school premises at night on those dates, though he stayed outside school. The case was reported to police with the accused being suspended from duty while the complainant was taken to Letsholathebe Hospital for medical examination. Though the medical form did not show any injuries, Detective Inspector Phelindaba Gumede of Maun Police, told the court that the absence of injuries does not rule out penetration. He said that looking at the victim’s condition it is extremely unlikely that he lied. He also told the court that during questioning the accused opted to remain silent. The accused is out on bail and the court will make a ruling today (Friday).

Kenneth Douglas, 55, took advantage of 16 years of night shifts to abuse the women’s bodies. He was frequently high on drink or drugs during his macabre activities, which were only discovered after police carried out DNA tests. Douglas is already serving a prison sentence after admitting having sex with the nearly beheaded corpse of Karen Range, who was 19 when she was murdered in 1982. But he now faces two identical charges after forensic experts inHamilton County, Indianaanalysed evidence from twowomen who were murdered in 1991. Police believe the number of bodies he abused could be more than a hundred, though he claims to not remember any identities. ‘I am sure there are more [victims]. But only advances in DNA over the last 18 years linked Douglas to the crimes. The families of the women were contacted when he was charged. ‘It’s fair to say they were devastated by this news,’ Mr Deters said. ‘I feel badly for the families who are never going to know. He added: ‘I hope I never see anybody like Kenneth Douglas again.’
